MME CME Programmes

What You Need to Know about Mandatory Medical Ethics (MME) CME

  1. In SMC’s circular to all doctors dated 11 May 2023, doctors were informed that compulsory CME on Medical Ethics would be required for Practising Certificate (PC) renewal in 2026. Click here for the circular. Click here for SMC’s CME requirements.
  2. If your 2-year PC was renewed on 1 Jan 2024 and expires on 31 Dec 2025, you may start accumulating your 5 MME points during this 2-year period.
  3. If your 1-year or 2-year PC expires on 31 Dec 2024, you do not need to accumulate MME until your PC is renewed on 1 Jan 2025. (If you complete any MME activities before 1 Jan 2025, you will only get non-core CME points. In addition, once this activity is completed, you will not be able to access this module for MME points in 2025. Please check your MME cycle qualifying period carefully because fees paid cannot be refunded.)
  4. If you are applying for the reduced practice lower CME requirement PC, you will only need to accrue 10 or 20 CME points respectively for their 1-year or 2-year PC. No core points including Medical Ethics core points is needed. 1
  5. MME programmes will be offered by the 3 Professional Bodies (i.e. AMS, CFPS and SMA) starting 2024. For each PB, some MME modules are open only to members, and others to all doctors.
  6. SMA Members in good standing can choose from 16 ready modules (webinars, distance-learning programmes and articles). Only the first 5 modules completed within the 2-year renewal period will yield 1 MME point each. Subsequent completed modules will only get non-core CME points. Access is complimentary.
  7. Non-members and SMA Members in arrears can choose from only 11 modules (webinars and distance-learning programmes). They will not be able to access articles. Access is charged at the non-member rate.
  8. MME modules can only be completed once. If you feel compelled to do these modules even though your MME cycle only starts on 1 Jan 2025, leave at least 5 modules uncompleted until 2025, for the 5 MME points you will need. Otherwise, in 2025 you will have to get your MME points from other MME activities (e.g. AMS or CFPS).
