MASEAN Conference
The 20th Medical Association of South East Asian Nations (MASEAN) Conference was held from 24 to 26 May 2024 in Penang, Malaysia. As MASEAN Secretariat, SMA supported the running of the conference together with the host, the Malaysian Medical Association.
SMA Honorary Treasurer Dr Ng Chew Lip was SMA's representative for the meeting, and also chaired the proceedings as MASEAN Secretary General. Representatives from the MASEAN member associations presented their respective country reports, and gave presentations on this year's theme of "Commercialisation of Healthcare".
The MASEAN Group of Journals also met concurrently in Penang to discuss on various initiatives and projects.
SMA is a member of three regional/international bodies, namely MASEAN, the Confederation of Medical Associations in Asia and Oceania, and the World Medical Association.
SMA presentations to medical graduates
During the recent orientations organised by MOH Holdings (MOHH) at NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Duke-NUS Medical School and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, SMA representatives spoke to newly graduated medical students on the role the Association plays in the profession.
They highlighted SMA's advocacy efforts for junior doctors through representation on the Ministry of Health (MOH) National Wellness Committee for Junior Doctors and ongoing engagements with MOHH, MOH and other relevant parties to support junior doctors' well-being. SMA representatives also introduced our new social media initiatives aimed at disseminating useful information to junior doctors and medical students. Additionally, they shared about the support provided to needy medical students and emphasised the platform that SMA offers for lifelong learning in areas such as medical ethics, health law and medical practice, thereby promoting high standards of medical professionalism.
SMA congratulates the freshly minted house officers and wishes them all the best in their medical careers. SMA Membership is crucial, as every Member strengthens SMA's voice in advocating for and enhancing the local healthcare landscape, for doctors and patients alike.
