2021 SMA Annual General Meeting

Please see below for details of SMA’s upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The AGM will be held virtually, due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic conditions. For more details on the

Please send an email to szeyong@sma.org.sg if you wish to:

  1. Confirm your attendance (please provide your full name as it appears in the Singapore Medical Council [SMC] register and MCR number);
  2. Submit resolutions and/or propose constitution amendments; or
  3. Submit nominations to fill the ten vacancies in the SMA Council.


Members who wish to move any resolution or raise amendments to the Constitution and Rules at the AGM are to give notice in writing to the Honorary Secretary by 12 pm on 26 March 2021, in accordance with SMA Constitution Article XI, Section 1, Sub-Section (iii) and Article XII, Section 2, respectively.

Members are invited to submit nominations of candidates to fill the ten vacancies in the Council, in accordance with Article VIII, Section 3a of the SMA Constitution.

Nominations must be signed by two Ordinary/Life/Spouse Members and contain a consent to act, if elected, signed by the person nominated. All completed forms should reach us by 12 pm on 26 March 2021.

Nominated Member of Parliament

SMA is pleased to announce that SMA President Dr Tan Yia Swam is one of the nine new Nominated Members of Parliament (NMP) appointed to serve a two-and-a-half-year term starting from 21 January 2021. The previous SMA Council Member who served as NMP was Adj Prof Tan Sze Wee from 2005 to 2006. Please see link below for the press release from the Parliament of Singapore.

Our heartiest congratulations go out to Dr Tan on her appointment, and SMA looks forward to continuing to advocate for both patients and doctors in Parliament.

Feedback on SMC ECEG and HME

The SMC is undertaking a review of the SMC Ethical Code and Ethical Guidelines (ECEG) and the Handbook on Medical Ethics (HME).

The deadline for the submission of feedback has been extended to 31 March 2021, so that all medical practitioners will have sufficient time and opportunity to contribute to the review.

SMC will also be holding a Zoom session to seek further feedback on the possible revisions that could be made to the ECEG and HME in view of the changing medical landscape. Please see below for details on the feedback session.

Passing of Dr Jarnail Singh

The SMA Council informs with regret the news of SMA Life Member Dr Jarnail Singh Khosa’s demise on 6 February 2021. Dr Jarnail was the President of the International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine, and Chairman of the Civil Aviation Medical Board, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, and aviation medicine subspecialty training committee. He has also made immense contributions to the field of aviation medicine internationally. The 61st SMA Council wishes to extend our deepest condolences to Dr Jarnail’s family during this time of grief.


Ng Chew Lip is an ENT consultant in public service. After a day of doctoring and cajoling his two princesses at home to finish their food, his idea of relaxation is watching a drama serial with his lovely wife and occasionally throwing some paint on a canvas.
