Signing of MoU for Medical Expert Witness Training Course

On 14 March 2018, the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (AMS); Law Society of Singapore (LSS); Singapore Academy of Law (SAL) and SMA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to continue organising the Medical Expert Witness Training Course to train and encourage more doctors to become expert witnesses.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon, A/Prof Benjamin Ong, Director of Medical Services, Ministry of Health, and Prof Tan Ser Kiat, president of Singapore Medical Council.

Risk of gadolinium brain deposits associated with the use of GBCA

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) recently concluded a review on the potential risk of gadolinium deposition in the brain following repeated use of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCA).

While there is currently no definite evidence of clinical harm of gadolinium brain deposition following GBCA administration, HSA advises healthcare professionals to use the lowest effective dose of GBCA whenever possible and repeated doses of GBCAs should only be administered after careful benefit-risk assessment. NUS Medicine appreciation dinner for SMACF Board

National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS Medicine) organised an appreciation dinner to thank SMA Charity Fund (SMACF) for its support through the SMA Medical Students' Assistance Fund (SMA-MSAF) bursary, which provides financial support to medical students in need. Since its inception in 2013, SMACF has awarded 112 NUS Medicine students with 144 bursaries* amounting to about $716,000.

*There are 25 SMA-MSAF recipients who have been awarded the bursary more than once during their course of study.
